Event code of conduct

This code of conduct applies at every event we host or organise, online and in person. It is short because it is meant to be read.

1. Who this applies to

This code of conduct applies to everyone at an event we host or organise — attendees, speakers, staff and anyone else in the room or the channel.

2. Expected behaviour

Be considerate, be direct, and assume the person you are talking to knows something you do not.

  • Use welcoming language and respect differing viewpoints
  • Accept constructive criticism without making it personal
  • Give people room to speak, especially those speaking less
  • Follow the venue's rules and the instructions of event staff

3. Unacceptable behaviour

The following are not tolerated at any event, in any form, including in private messages between attendees.

  • Harassment, intimidation or discrimination of any kind
  • Unwelcome sexual attention or imagery
  • Sustained disruption of talks or conversations
  • Photographing or recording someone who has asked you not to
  • Advocating for or encouraging any of the above

4. Reporting

If you experience or witness a breach, tell any member of event staff. They are briefed to act, not to mediate.

Reports are handled confidentially. We will not share your identity with the person reported without your agreement, unless we are legally required to.

5. Consequences

Event staff may take any action they consider appropriate, up to and including removing someone from the event without a refund and reporting the matter to the venue or to the police.

There is no appeal process during an event. Decisions taken in the room stand until the event ends.
